exhibition: life in the system

Exhibition dates: 13 June - 7 July 2024
Gallery:
M16 Artspace, Australia

Life in the system invites audiences to explore the abstract world of Olde’s intricate hand-woven 3-dimensional fabric forms. Olde's work continues her exploration of woven forms that mimic living tissue, life-like structures and functions. In this exhibition, Olde draws inspiration from artificial life and plant growth model algorithms, processing them through digital applications, working symbiotically with her loom to create physical/digital woven artworks. By overlaying these concepts with loom-controlled 3-dimensional weaving and contrasting materials, the threads move unpredictably, resulting in emergent organic forms. Olde uses weaving as a metaphor for complexity within life systems, where small individual elements and rules act cumulatively upon the whole, resulting in emergent behaviour.
